Does Obama Really Follow Justin Bieber on Twitter?

Hmm, I Wonder Who Obama Follows On Twitter-Justin Bieber Maybe?

Yesterday we ran a story about how you could follow the Whitehouse and Obama on Twitter. Today we’re going to take that one step further. Did you ever wonder who Obama follows on Twitter? You would think that would be a good list to get on. Well, as you’d expect, he follows groups like the IRS, the U.S. Embassy, the Secretary of the Navy, the Army, Veteran Affairs. But there are also a few individuals he follows. Like who?

Well, as you would expect, he Obama follows his right hand man Press Secretary Bobby Gibbs. I still don’t get why people call him Robert Gibbs because he definitely strikes me as a Bobby. He also follows a guy by the name of BillBurton44 who is some sort of deputy secretary that likes to get on John McCain for not being more fluent with computers. Reading Burton’s tweets was kind of like watching paint dry so I wouldn’t recommend following him. However, something on his Twitter account said it was an official Whitehouse Twitter page and as such, the tweets could be officially archived. So that might be kind of cool if you could get one of your tweets officially archived. Wait, doesn’t Google archive all your information anyway? Oh well…

And if that isn’t weird enough, he also follows KateatState i.e. Kate Jacobs Stanton. Exactly, that’s what I was thinking–who is she? Well, get this–she used to work for Google as a moderator, whatever that is–yes you read that correctly. Obama appointed her to a newly created position–one of those 4 million jobs created–of Director of Citizen Participation. What, are your serious? Are you kidding me? I’m betting she makes over 6 figures a year and I’m not sure that’s the best use of taxpayer money. Actually, don’t worry about your tax dollars being wasted here. Katie is busy tweeting about important political stuff like Maddow attending bar at the Washing correspondent get together after party termed “nedrprom”. Do I detect a secret crush here? I know aman crush is a bromance–what’s a woman crush–a worance? That kinda sounds like Scooby Doo–but I digress. Katie Stanton was so busy doing her new government job tweeting all day long she forgot to attend her son’s play at school–imagine that. Twitter followers were asked if she should buy him ice cream or Bakugan (video game). Yah, that’s a no brainer. She further mused that missing the play was OK if she could get Justin Bieber’s autograph at the nerdprom–I’m seriously not kidding here–these are your hard-earned tax dollars at work.

So while originally I planned on just writing about Whitehouse followers, this whole nerdprom thing has me a little upset. Among the invitees to nerprom were Jon Bon Jovi and Jay Leno as well as the aforementioned teen throb Justin Bieber. At this point now, I don’t think anything would surprise me. You have to give Obama credit though, he is definitely catering to pop stars and Hollywood. He knows that by getting their support, you get the support of the masses that follow them.

I just hope the next time we come under terrorist attack that the counsel of such wise strategists like Leno and Bieber will prove to have been productive.

Why Facebook, Twitter & The Little Guy Should Be Scared: Google Wave

Have you ever tried getting in contact with Google customer service? I’ve thought about it, but have never actually tried. If you have been successful, please let me know how your experience was with them in the comments below this article. I simply never had the ambition to even try. Someone once likened their customer service to that of a visit to the doctors office where you have to wait 45 minutes to get in, the incompetence of the bureau of motor vehicles and the worst service you’ve ever received from a phone company…..times 500. Basically, if you are able to get through, they simply direct you to their back website where you may then email them–lucky you! Hold onto that luck because you’ll need it to get any worthwhile response…if any.

But I must say, what I’ve seen with their demonstration with Google Wave, I am impressed. You can view their demo of the wave here. But that’s what actually scares me. It scares the crap out of me actually. Why? Well, look at Google Search, Adwords, & Adsense. Can you say monopoly? That’s changing a bit with other ad networks popping up, but they’ve managed to Dominate paid search–all while having THE WORST customer service in the world. How do they do that??? Well, they obviously have a great product in high demand. That’s the scary part. It’s like a mean monster having the power to create water on a deserted Pacific island. If you make that big monster mad, well, forget it, you’re screwed. It’s like in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king. In the land of paid internet search, Google is king…there is no other.

Ever heard of a Google slap? Did you see what Twitter did to all those marketers that added or deleted friends too quickly? Ever sent out a bunch of emails on Facebook asking a lot of people to be friends? They don’t like that sort of thing–it’s kind of spammy. Google already has enough power and control and this Wave thing will only consolidate power even further?

Think I’m joking? While Google likes to say it wants the Wave to be open, it only invited 100,000 people to test it. Want to get into the network? You have to be invited. How waspy is that? Some remember that that is how gmail was introduced and people were willing to pay money for it. Think you can buy your way in? Nope. People have already tried so Google is no longer allowing anymore user invites. So much for openness.

So I am giving Google credit for their Wave, even though I’ve never personally used it. Heck, it only took them 2 years to develop it. But at least Google is in the black making money which is more than Facebook and Twitter can say.

I just hope Yahoo or MSN come out with something similar to rival the colorful  jolly  G giant. If not, where are all the little guys to go when Google gives them the boot for spamming or inviting too many friends? I don’t care for spam as much as the next person. But when a small publisher that’s just new and starting out tries to get into Adwords and can’t because they don’t get 100k views per month…well, that’s just not very open to me. Call me silly.

So Google will deserve all the credit they get for this little Wave app–and they do deserve it. I just hope and pray that there are alternatives being developed because it just doesn’t seem fair when the new guy gets shut out just because he can’t generate traffic like some of the big dogs.

So what do you think? What impact do you think Google Wave will have on online marketing and other services like Twitter and Facebook? Leave your comments below…

Employers Blocking Facebook, Twitter & Myspace

More Than Half of Employers Now Block Twitter, Facebook, MySpace: “

Can’t check Facebook or Twitter from the office? You’re not alone. In fact, you might be in the majority.

According to a new survey of 1,400 CIOs of companies with 100 or more employees, 54% now completely block employees from accessing social networking sites at work.

Only 10% of those surveyed let employees use social networks however they please, while the remainder all impose at least some restrictions on usage, like limiting it to business purposes only.

The survey, which was developed by Robert Half Technology, is consistent with other recent reports that show companies are quickly moving to block social media in the workplace. Of course, even when companies allow social media, it doesn’t always end well for employees. Another recent report indicated that 8% of companies in the US have fired staff over social media misuse.

It seems we’re still in the early days of employers trying to find a policy that works – perhaps being over restrictive in the interim – and employees learning from the mistakes of others.

What restrictions does your employer place on social media usage? Share your experience in the comments.

Texas Tech Has Twitter Problem

Texas Tech Has a Twitter Problem: “Michael David Smithby Michael David Smith

Filed under:

Brandon CarterTexas Tech had a bad day on Saturday, dropping a 29-28 heartbreaker to Houston for its second consecutive loss. But it had a downright weird day on Sunday, with one of its best players being suspended indefinitely and announcing that suspension via Twitter, and another senior leader turning to Twitter to rip the football program and head coach Mike Leach.

Tech offensive lineman Brandon Carter tweeted on Sunday, ‘I am not a captain anymore and will not be playing this week. Good luck red raiders ill still be cheering on my family from the stands!!:)’ Carter appears to have deleted his Twitter account (@BCSLAM) after that, but not before the Lubbock Avalanche Journal noted the tweet and the suspension, which has been confirmed by the Tech athletic department.

Twitter Phishing Scam Exposed

Twitter phishing scam spreads via direct messages: “

A new phishing scam is spreading through Twitter via direct messages, according to several reports.

Itamar Kestenbaum writes on his JewNews.net blog that he received a direct message on his Twitter account from someone he didn’t know that said ‘rofl this you on here?’ followed by a link to what appeared to be a video-related Twitter page.

The page looks like a legitimate Twitter log-in page but nabs your credentials if you type in your password, he warns.

Meanwhile, a posting on the Mashable blog said the site had received multiple reports of the new phishing scam and that someone there had even received one of the phishing-related direct messages themselves.

No word on this yet on Twitter’s official blog or from a Twitter spokesperson. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.

In the meantime, if you clicked on the phishing link and typed in your credentials, you should change your password immediately.

Update at 5:30 p.m. PDT: Twitter acknowledged the phishing scam in a tweet on Wednesday that said ‘A bit o’phishing going on–if you get a weird direct message, don’t click on it and certainly don’t give your login creds!’

JewNews.net captured this screenshot of the phishing-related direct message Twitter users are receiving and the fake log in page the link directs to.

Twitter Gets $100 Million Of Funding; Advertising A Distinct Possibility

Another $100 million for Twitter?: ”

Twitter’s long-anticipated business plan had better be close on the horizon, because according to the Wall Street Journal, the site has some new investors on board: Mutual fund T. Rowe Price, Insight Venture Partners, and a handful of others have reportedly pumped $100 million into the microblogging phenomenon.

TechCrunch reported last week that Twitter was putting together a round of funding at around a $1 billion valuation. But that report suggested that the company would do so by raising about $50 million–half of what it actually has, per the WSJ, in a deal expected to close Thursday.

Twitter still doesn’t make significant revenue. But its founders have said that paid corporate accounts, in the form of a sort of ‘analytics dashboard,’ are imminent. Advertising isn’t out of the question either, despite what some of the company’s executives have said in the past.

The company’s initial round of Series B funding last year valued it at about $80 million, but soon added to the round in a deal that upped the valuation well into the hundreds of millions.

Employee Gets Fired For Twitter Rant

CPK Server Fired for Tweets: Did He Deserve It?: “

traphikWhat you say and do on social media sites can have negative repercussions. In fact, 8% of US companies have fired employees for social media misuse.

Meanwhile, you may remember the stories about a disgusting YouTube video leading to a few Domino’s Pizza employees getting fired, and how wild Facebook photos got some apartment tenants evicted.

Obviously not heeding the lessons of the social media victims before him, Twitter user “Timothy DeLaGhetto,” aka @Traphik, tweeted something deemed inappropriate by his employer, California Pizza Kitchen, and he was subsequently fired.

Here’s the story in the short: Timothy, a server at CPK, was none too happy about a recent uniform change, so he turned to Twitter to tell his company how he felt.

The initial tweet read, “@calpizzakitchen black button ups are the lamest shit ever!!!.” The tweet most certainly prompted a response from the company, and eventually the Twitterer was tracked down to a Long Beach CPK store and fired for his behavior.

In response to the firing, Timothy posted a YouTube video explaining the circumstances around his controversial tweets and firing. While apparently jovial about the situation, and clearly not interested in getting his job back, the former CPK employee isn’t ready to just let the situation die.

We recommend you watch the video for the full story, but we’re more curious about your take on whether or not CPK did the right thing in firing the disgruntled Twitterer. We have mixed feelings. While all of us think his tweets were outlandish, we’re not all convinced that expressing discontent about a uniform change is cause for firing. So, did Timothy deserve to get fired for his tweets? Vote in the poll and share your thoughts in the comments:

Did the CPK server, @Traphik, deserve to get fired for his tweets?(opinion)

Facebook Launches @ Status Tags Like Twitter

@Facebook Launching Status Tagging for All Users Today: “

Last week, Facebook announced that it was launching “status tagging,” a new way to tag friends, Pages, groups, and events in status updates much like mentions on @twitter work. Now, the feature is live for all users.

status-tag-publisher

Here’s how it works: when writing a status update in the publisher, you can tag connections by using the “@” operator to select any friend, Page, group, or event in a dropdown menu. When a connection is tagged, its name is automatically linked, and your post also shows up on their wall. When you’re tagged, a notification is sent to you as well, and you can remove tags of yourself in others’ posts. It’s a very engaging and powerful way to include friends and connections in status updates.

status-tagging

It’s important to note that Facebook is enabling status tagging for all of a user’s Facebook connections – not just friends, but Pages, groups, and events as well. This means Page managers will now have a major new channel for tracking comments and feedback about their brand or business.

Until today, brands have been able to track posts and comments made on their Facebook Page directly by fans, as well as search public comments made by Facebook users through Facebook’s new real time search. However, starting today, all @ tags will appear on the wall of the Page as well, even though users never visited the Page. That’s a big deal for Page administrators hoping to gain more insight into how they’re being talked about inside Facebook.
